Avoiding Illness

So my query for today is:
Is it possible to avoid getting sick when you work in the main office of an Elementary/Jr. High/High School?
I mean really is there any hope for me. Can I really wash my hands enough to prevent the germs that are everywhere around me from entering my body? And what about that hand sanitizer stuff. Does it really work? Is it just something I use to make myself feel better. What about sanitizing wipes? Will they kill the germs on my phone? Does a sick room qualify as a hazmat zone? Can I be the "girl in the bubble"? I have become paranoid:( This has happened before. Incidentally my glands are swollen and my eyes are burning. My efforts are futile..........

I think you're doomed for sickness. And, I have heard that hand sanitizer is little more effective than water, so don't count on that stuff! Hey, at least you got a decent immune system; I have little pitty . . .:)
Yes, I just read a study result yesterday that said that hand washing is your best defense. Also, the anti-bacterial wipes used on surfaces, especially the phone. And don't touch your own face with your hands while at work. Your best defense is a strong immune system, which you will develop being exposed to all those germs!
Airborne really works for me (available at Costco). I take it once a day when I know I'm being exposed to stuff and three times a day when I get a cold. I had an awful cold last week (Dad has it now). Three days of Airborne and it was virtually gone. Actually, SLEEP is the best thing you can do to boost your immune system.
The hand sanitizers are useful in a pinch, but plain old soap and water (according to the above-mentioned study) is really the very best. Just be sure to have a good hand lotion on your desk too, because all that hand washing is murder on the hands.
I once had a doctor tell me (after three weeks of one cold after another) that I might as well tell the sun not to shine as expect children not to cough in my face. But I continued to try to teach them good hygiene habits anyway.
